NIPPON Hand Painted Hot Chocolate Pot or Teapot - Pre-1921 Antique - Ornate gold and green Painted P

Lovely ornate antique Nippon China Teapot trimmed in gold. Hand Painted pink flowers with generous gold trim, so very pretty. These are marked with a green M in a wreath and NIPPON on the back of each plate. The mark is known as "Van Patten’s Green #47" and it was from Morimura Brothers, importers. This mark was registered for the US market around 1911. The vast majority of Nippon wares produced during the Nippon era were manufactured by the company that would later become the modern day Noritake Company. This teapot has been in the family a very long time. Lovely condition, minimal crazing near handle - no cracks or chips. Gold in great condition. Base Measures 5.25", 9.5" tall with lid Japanese porcelain made for export to the United States from 1891 to 1921 is called "Nippon Porcelain" because the word "Nippon" was on each piece. The word "Nippon" was required by the McKinley Tariff Act of 1890. This law stated that all manufactured goods imported to the United States be marked with the country of origin. Since "Nippon" was the Japanese word for the country of Japan, porcelain made there for the U.S. market was marked "Nippon" to comply with the new law. American trade officials accepted "Nippon" as the name of the country of origin until 1921. At that time, it was ruled that "Nippon" was a Japanese word. Since the law required the country of origin to be an English word, the use of "Nippon" was forbidden from 1921 on.
